This scholarship is open to teachers, head teachers - student welfare, school counsellors, and health, physical education and personal development teachers currently teaching students at risk of youth depression within NSW schools and TAFE NSW campuses. The scholarship is for the study, investigation, and application of best practices relevant to the prevention or building awareness of depression in children and adolescents in educational settings.
The successful applicant will identify programs, resources, and/or practices that are either being successfully delivered in education settings or which have strong potential to be delivered in these settings. The applicant will be expected to share (and implement, where possible) their study tour learnings, to advance understanding of what schools can be doing to prevent the onset and escalation of depression in their students. The study tour will also be expected to contribute to raising awareness among schools regarding the importance of youth depression prevention.
Applicants should ideally incorporate a Black Dog Institute course into their proposal.
The Anika Foundation can support the scholar by:
- providing an introduction about the goals of the Anika Foundation and examples of what previous scholars have studied and achieved.
- providing recommendations for short courses that might be of interest to the scholar and introductions to thought leaders in youth depression prevention.
- providing an opportunity to share their learning via the annual Anika Foundation fundraising event.
The successful applicant will undertake a study tour and follow-up activities of up to five weeks internationally or within Australia. Study tour travel is to be completed in one block between 1 January and 30 June 2025, with individual follow-up activities and reporting to be completed within 90 days of study tour completion.
Time may involve formal study (e.g. undertaking a short course at a respected tertiary institution) or may involve a program of visits to sites, schools and institutions to conduct interviews, observe exemplary practices and collect resources for the preparation of teaching materials related to the specific scholarship category.
A portion of time (up to one week) may be allocated toward follow-up dissemination activities (e.g. experience-sharing, professional learning) within and across NSW, either in-person or virtually.
Up to two scholarships of $15,000 each will be offered for travel during 2025.
