Starting preschool social narratives

A social narrative is an effective way to teach children how to navigate a new situation, such as starting preschool.

Social narratives can help children understand what to expect at preschool and they can be used to support orientation.

These social narratives have been developed as templates for preschools to use as part of their transition practices. Some photos have been included to represent a diverse range of contexts, however, these can be changed to suit your own setting. A number of versions of the social story templates are available, requiring various technical skills. You can choose the option best suited to your preschool.

Use suggested words in the examples below to make a social story about your preschool. Adjust the text and photos where you need to and add in some photos from your school.

Modify the narratives

  • The templates are designed to be modified to suit the needs of all children, including Aboriginal, EAL/D, HPG students, and students with disability.
  • Edit the story words and pictures to suit the needs of the children and families transitioning to your preschool.
  • Some children may require one or more individualised stories, each focusing on a different aspect of the day and learning environment.
  • For families who speak a language other than English at home, translated versions of the stories are available in 15 different languages.
